Project update: new front and rear bumpers...

In preparation for the 2011 Christmas BBQ for the Vintage & Classic Car Club of Ballarat (will post photos of the event soon), I swapped the original bent and rusty bumpers for new full chrome bumpers from a Sigma GL model. The SE luxury spec version bumpers have an ugly black rubber strip and the GL low spec version ones don't. I prefer the full chrome ones. I also fitted new front blinker lenses and new bumper blinker lenses. Here are some before and after shots:

Project Sigma: new wheels are now polished...

Ok, here is the end result now that the new Globe Montego wheels are all (hand) polished (by me). I also washed them and put some tyre shine on the tyres too, looks great!

Next on the to do list is putting Chrysler Pentastar logos on the centre caps of the new wheels and also fitting the new wooden steering wheel. I already have the steering wheel and the rare Sigma horn button from a Peter Wherret Sigma, now the only thing missing is the boss kit.

Project update: polishing the new wheels...

I've been re-polishing each wheel during the week and here is the before and after photos. There are still some bitumen bits stuck to some of the wheels but I will remove these later with a proper bug and tar remover.

Project update: new GH Sigma Turbo wheels...

Here's the latest addition to my project Sigma: a set of 5 (yes even the spare!) Globe Montego wheels of a GH Sigma Turbo.

They only made 500 Sigma Turbos so that makes these wheels extra rare!

The wheels are all polished but need a bit of a re-polish to get them back to full shine, which I'll be doing next time I have a bit of free time to spare.

Here's another great Ebay find: a green 1979 Chrysler Sigma GL Wagon.

The car is in great original condition.

The only part that's not original is the wheels.

According to the owner, the engine runs extremely well and the car has only covered 214,000 original kilometres!

The interior also is in great condition.

One of the things Sigma Wagons were most praised for when they were new was the great boot space and ease of access.

My Sigma: new wooden steering wheel...

And so the madness begins... I have just bought the first (of many) accessories for my Sigma: a wooden Autotecnica steering wheel. The reason I chose this particular one is because I was after a wooden steering wheel that matches the look and period of my GE Sigma. Many Japanese car lovers fit this style steering wheel to their pre-1985 Japanese cars. Now I just got to find a boss kit to fit or at least a Sigma horn button as I'm sure I have an old boss kit hiding somewhere in the garage!

GJ Scorpion Wagon...

No that's not a typo and your eyes do not deceive you. These photos are of a GJ Scorpion Wagon, more specifically, a Sigma Wagon fitted with a GJ Scorpion front.

It's an aquired taste, but trust me, if you ever had the pleasure of seeing this beast in the wild (or in a car park in South East Melbourne), you would instantly fall in love with it, like I did!

The wheels are from a Sigma GSR and the interior was also in great condition.

Here is a great Ebay find that just came into my inbox: a one owner, all original 1979 Chrysler/Mitsubishi Scorpion.

The car is in almost perfect condition, the only little blemishes being a few small rust spots.

Besides that, the car has been looked after very well. The car seat covers were fitted when the car was new, so the seats were preserved and look like new!

On the outside, the rear window louvre was also fitted when the car was new so that also helped keep the interior looking like new.

The car looks great and has only done 94,365kms!!

How to: fit quad motorbike carbs on a 4G52 or 4G54...

Here is a nice mod I'm considering if I keep the 4G54 engine in my Sigma: fitting quad (that's right, four!) motorbike carburettors!

For those of you that don't know already, this was posted on the http://www.sigma-galant.com/ forums by user Superscan811. Here is a quick guide he posted about how to perform this operation:

"Basic CV carb setup:

You will need a fuel pressure regulator that can regulate down to 0.5psi. These carbs are gravity fed on the motorbike so pushing anything more tha 1.5psi isn't a good thing. I modified a standard holley carb fuel pressure regulator by compressing the internal spring a bit. This allowed me to be able to regulate the fuel pressure down to 0.25psi.

Based on my current setup of the quad 38mm Mikuni's off a 1995 Suzuki GSX-R750:

1. You shouldn't need to change either of the Idle jets (fuel and air blead). The idle AFR I'm currently running is around 17:1, without any issues.

2. Standard float height.

3. Main Fuel jet size 1.55mm.

4. Needle position will be determined by the wear on the "needle Jet", try the middle position first.

The only other thing to I'd recommend is to attach a cable for the choke. I only use it to start the engine on a cold morning. For the rest of the day, it isn't needed. Because CV carbs don't have an acceleration fuel pump, pumping the accelerator when trying to start the car does nothing."

If you want to modernize your old Mitsubishi but want to use a Mitsubishi engine, an easy choice is the Galant/Lancer Evo 4G63 or 4G64 engines. With a bit of work (rerouting the water coolant hoses and intake manifold) you can convert one of these engines from east-west to north-south mounting to fit it into older Mitsubishis! Here are a couple of videos of someone who's done just that to his Mitsubishi Mighty Max (aka L200 or Triton):

The engine is a modifyed 2.6 litre Astron motor mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.

The body is in excellent condition and is painted in a beautiful metalic green colour.

The wheels are polished Simmons B45 rims and are 6 inches wide in the front with 205/50R15 tyres and 10 inches wide in the rear with 245/50R15 tyres.

Here are a couple of videos from this very quick little Corolla. The car was built by Tony Rigolli Performance and runs a highly modifyed Mitsubishi 4G63 engine with a huge turbo! As you can see the car has great potential, but the car crashed and rolled over recently... Hopefully they decide to scrap the body and put the running gear in a old Sigma body!

The car is in good condition for it's age and would still turn a few heads!

The engine is the venerable Astron II 2.6 litre and the gearbox is a 3 speed automatic.

According to the seller, this car is one of three ever made Scorpion Convertibles with an electrically operated retractable roof.

I went to the newsagency today and look what I found: a full feature on a spotless 1981 Mitsubishi Sigma GLX Peter Wherrett special. The feature goes for five pages and is in full colour! If you're in Australia head over to your local newsagent and buy yourself a copy of this great magazine, that way hopefully they will feature more Sigmas!

I wouldn't miss out on this one either, it's a 1978 Chrysler Sigma SE, and has been kept in storage for the last 2 years!

Cars like these are getting hard to find, if I had money to spare at the moment I would be buying all of these Sigmas to save them!

Yes, yet another cool Ebay find: a Sigma fitted with a Ford Cleaveland 351 5.8 litre V8 setup for burnout competitions.

Here are the cool things about this car: Ford Cleaveland 351 V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission, rebuilt engine with 30thou bore, new pistons, rings and bearings, 2V heads with heavy duty valve springs with dampners and chrome moly retainers.

Oh and it's a convertible!

Here is another nice modifyed V8 Sigma, which so far has run a best of high 12's on the quarter-mile (low 13's on street tyres):

This is a 1982 GJ Sigma powered by a Holden 5.0 litre 308 V8. It used a Turbo 350 automatic transmission with quick shift kit and oil cooler, Holden VL Commodore V8 LSD differential modifyed to fit the Sigma, B&M shifter, stall converter, strut brace, electronic ignition, L34 cilinder heads with roller rockers, modifyed camshaft, high flow oil pump, Holley 650 double pump carburettor and sports air filter, power steering, electric radiator fan, aluminium Desert Cooler radiator, all with a comprehensive engineer's report.

Also worth mentioning are the GH Peter Wherrett Sigma mag wheels and modifyed front and rear suspensions.

And on the inside there are also a nice pair of front Recaro seats, wooden steeting wheel and custom gauges.

There are so many modifyed Sigmas on Ebay lately! Here is another one:

This car might not look like much from the outside, but it's got all the important bits under the bonnet!

The enigne is a modifyed Astron 2.0 litre engine with a 2.6 head, blow-through T3 custom hybrid turbocharger, custom intake manifold modifyed to suit 390cfm 4 barrel Holley carburettor, modifyed turbo camshaft and heavy duty valve springs, all mod-plated!

Gearbox is still the stock 3 speed Borg Warner automatic transmission and the exhaust is 3 inch in diameter.

Here is another yellow V8 Scorpion. But this one is a legend, being around for over 10 years! If you got the cash, grab yourself this very special car! I remember this car at the 2003 Easternats, and it has become even faster now!

As you can see below, this car is now set up as a very serious drag car. It comes without an engine or transmission, but it is set up for a Chevrolet big block V8 engine and powerglide automatic transmission. Image below courtesy of hpheaven.com.au.

The differential is a 9inch with Strange components. It comes with 32x14 M/T slicks, Moroso front runners, 3.5inch Strange tail-shaft.

On the inside you'll find a 10 point Funny Car style roll cage with all alloy tin work, flame proof shrouded wiring, and Auto Meter gauges.

Out the back there are some wheelie-bars, which are necessary as this car can easily handle 1000hp, according to the owner.

Here is another Ebay find: a Scorpion drag car.

According to the seller, the engine is a balanced 2.6 Astron II with custom turbocharger, twin worked 1.75 Stromberg carburettors, custom induction, 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust and wastegate, alcohol injection to cool the turbo, high volume electric fuel pump with racing fuel cell, fuel pressure regulator and electronic fuel mixture monitor, electric radiator fan, 5 speed manual gearbox with Exedy race clutch and 3:9 locked differential.

Inside, there is a roll cage with 5 point racing harness, sports steering wheel, monster tachometer with shift light, turbo boost gauge with adjustable boost control.

Project update: finally got a better look at the brown Sigma SE in proper daylight...

I finally got to have a more thorough look at my new brown Sigma SE today. There is a lot of play on the water pump shaft but a new replacement has already been ordered from my local auto parts shop.

I also did a bit of research on pricing and availability of moulded interior carpets for the Sigma. I can either buy a plush pile moulded carpet from a place in Melbourne for about $160 or a normal moulded carpet from a local place for $220. I think I'll go for the plush pile carpet, but that's for later, I'm mainly concentrating on getting the car ready to be registered now.
