Good news everyone! The new steering wheel boss kit I ordered arrived and I fitted it. The one I was using with the wooden steering wheel was old and had a couple of cracks in it and didn't come with proper Allen key bolts. The new one has all the right bits and it places the wheel a fraction closer to the dash, sitting in a much more natural and original position compared to the other one I was using.
Now onto the sad news. Upon further inspection of the engine, I found that it needs a new head gasket. Not sure if that's the entire reason why it won't run for longer than 30 seconds before stalling, but it's sure not helping. I've already started looking for the head gasket set. Watch this space!
